Why Chicago is a Major Advertising Photography Market
When one thinks publishing, New York immediately comes to mind. For filmmaking, Hollywood takes top prize. But, for advertising, who knew that Chicago would own bragging rights? By the beginning of the twentieth century the city's unrivaled success in mail order catalogs paved the way for modern advertising to flourish. In fact, Chicago mail order pioneers Montgomery Ward and Richard Warren Sears were the first great catalog copywriters.
Over time, the shift of advertising work to the Midwest was impressive. In the 1860s, only about 5 percent of the nation's advertising came from west of New York City. By 1906, 45 percent of all national advertising in the nation originated west of Manhattan.
The first great influential Chicago ad agency—Lord & Thomas—later become Foote, Cone & Belding, the agency which built some of the most successful brands of all time. The other great modern Chicago ad agency was Leo Burnett, started in 1935. Today, they have offices in 84 countries, employing over 8,000 people. Advertising Age ranked Burnett the third most influential person in the history of American advertising.
To add to the cultivation of the advertising industry, the Chicago Tribune was ranked third nationally among newspapers in total advertising linage from 1920-1950, creating and placing ads for thousands of its retail customers. Advertising Age, the world-renowned trade publication which set industry standards, was started in Chicago in 1930.
